Four Things We Should be Doing

This blog series follows my “Teachings of Jesus Class”
where we examined the words of Jesus recorded in the gospels.

Jesus taught that we have a role to play in the Reign of God (a.k.a. the Kingdom of God) and that we are to work hard at it (Matt 6:33). Here’s how we do that…

  • First Jesus taught us to turn and go the other way (Matt 4:17).  Jesus wants us to change what is wrong within us and within our culture. We can recognize what is wrong because wrong is always fueled by selfishness, greed, pride, violence, and hate. We are to turn from what is wrong and turn to the way of God, which is always fueled by love.
  • Jesus taught us to pray for God’s Reign to prevail on earth (Matthew 6:10).
  • Jesus taught us to serve others for in doing so the Reign of God is manifested (Mat 25:34-46):

Jesus told a parable that ended with:

“Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.”

Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink?…

‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me’

  • Jesus taught us to invite all of humanity to work for the Reign of God together (Matt 10:7).
